Scott Reef lies 270 kilometres off the coast of Western Australia.
It’s remote. Ancient. Pristine. And in danger.
Gas giant Woodside wants to drill more than 50 gas wells right next to Scott Reef – risking the stability of its fragile seabed and endangering the marine life that depends on it.
Scott Reef is more than 15 million years old. In its clear, tropical waters, endangered pygmy blue whales rest and feed. Vulnerable green sea turtles rely on its shores to lay their eggs. Hundreds of species thrive here – some that are found nowhere else on Earth.
Allowing Scott Reef to be industrialised into a gas field could be a death sentence for so much precious marine wildlife. We can’t risk the reef and let Woodside win.
You can join the fight to help save Scott Reef with a tax-deductible gift today.
The narrative Woodside is peddling to the public – that more gas is needed as we transition from coal to renewables – is completely false. Piper Rollins, one of ACF’s Climate Campaigners, shares:
"We're up against an extremely strategic, well-funded PR campaign from the gas industry and its lobbyists. We’re seeing gas advertising everywhere, spreading disinformation. Woodside is trying every trick in the book, desperately trying to convince the Australian public that more gas is an essential part of transitioning to renewables like solar and wind. But it’s not.
The science shows that more gas does not facilitate the renewable energy transition. In fact, it derails it."
You can help power our fight to help save Scott Reef from potential destruction. Here’s how a tax-deductible gift from you today can help:
- You can help power the work of campaigners like Piper, making sure our teams of experts are on Woodside's case.
- You can help fund media campaigns that expose the truth about Woodside’s dangerous narrative.
- You can help rally nature lovers from around Australia and create public pressure to stop Woodside’s possible destruction of Scott Reef.
The gas Woodside plans to drill from these offshore wells would feed its massive onshore Burrup Hub project – one of the most polluting fossil fuel proposals in Australian history.
ACF’s own analysis shows the Burrup Hub could unleash more lifetime emissions than 13 times Australia’s annual pollution.
And Woodside knows the risks. Its own environmental reports acknowledge damage to endangered species, ancient coral, and the broader Scott Reef ecosystem are all possible. Yet they are still trying to push ahead with drilling.
They’re willing to risk one of Australia’s most pristine coral reefs – just to boost their bottom line. And they’re doing it under cover of remoteness, betting that few Australians will notice.
We can’t let Woodside get away with their polluting new projects that could destroy nature every step of the way and derail our vibrant, renewable power future.
Your support can help us expose Woodside's dangerous narrative and hold them to account – before it’s too late. Donate now and help save Scott Reef.
Scott Reef has survived for millennia. Let’s make sure it stands for generations to come.
“Scott Reef is already hurting. Allowing this place to be industrialised into an oil and gas field could be a death sentence for so much precious marine wildlife.”
