You saw the massive news earlier this October that ACF is taking the Environment Minister to court to challenge his decision to approve Woodside’s disastrous North West Shelf extension to 2070.
ACF has now launched another fresh case against the Environment Minister, challenging his decision that the impacts of climate change on the Great Barrier Reef, Ningaloo Reef and countless native species – fuelled by Woodside’s giant North West Shelf gas project – didn’t even need assessment.
With two court cases on the go, now’s the time for ACF to double down and supercharge our efforts – and we need you with us. Will you please donate to our legal fight today?
This new case goes back to the first of a series of terrible decisions.
Back in 2019, then Coalition Environment Minister Sussan Ley decided that the nearly 4 billion tonnes of climate pollution Woodside’s gas extension will unleash did not need to be assessed under Australia’s national environment law.
That’s pollution that will cook our reefs, harm Ningaloo Reef’s vibrant marine life, and push precious wildlife closer to extinction.
Minister Watt had clear scientific evidence and a chance to make a better decision than the previous Coalition government.
Instead, he backed in Sussan Ley’s flawed call, and chose to exclude the climate consequences of this massive gas project for the Great Barrier Reef and threatened species across Australia.
We will argue that Minister Watt was not allowed to dismiss the nearly 4 billion tonnes of emissions from the processing and exporting of gas to 2070 in the way that he did.
When Labor came to power we expected better. Minister Watt was given a chance to stand up for people and nature – and he didn’t take it and backed the Coalition’s decision instead.
We absolutely must throw everything we have at challenging the Minister’s decision on Woodside’s mega-polluting project. Will you donate today to help us win this fight in court?
Together, we can hold the government to account for making outrageous decisions that harm our future.
