Devastating bushfires in Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park. Wildlife in peril.
It’s heartbreaking to imagine the future of native and threatened species impacted by the devastating bushfires that have already destroyed a staggering 76,000 hectares of habitat. Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park is a crucial ecosystem for over 300 native animal species including more than 50 threatened species like the Brush-tailed Rock Wallaby.
While cooler temperatures have brought relief to local residents, the steep terrain, dense forest and tinder-dry conditions mean the bushfires will burn well into the new year, resulting in catastrophic loss of wildlife. Local residents have already spoken of the remains of koalas and kangaroos unable to flee.
It’s not just the Grampians (Gariwerd) in crisis – our big backyard is at breaking point. Scorching heat. Catastrophic bushfires. Communities and wildlife without time to recover before the next disaster strikes. This is climate destruction, fuelled by gas and coal companies, and it’s getting worse.
Donate today to ACF’s Climate in Crisis Fund and you’ll back our legal efforts, enabling us to take big fossil fuel polluters to court, and you’ll power our most important election campaign to date, ensuring the next parliament acts with the urgency nature and communities need.
While big polluters profit, Australians are paying the price for these blazes with our health, homes and livelihoods.
We’re facing hotter fires of increased intensity that incinerate rather than rejuvenate the landscape. And we’re seeing them at increased frequency and over a longer bushfire season. In places like Gariwerd, this results in permanent ecological damage and decline.
This double whammy of deadly fires and extreme heat is leaving people and native animals alarmingly vulnerable throughout the long summer months. We need our leaders to commit to rapidly cutting climate pollution by stopping the climate wreckers and championing renewables.
That’s what the Climate in Crisis Fund will support. But we can’t do it without you.
Donate today to ACF’s Climate in Crisis Fund and you’ll help us stop the big polluters fuelling these chaotic weather events, again and again.
Enough is enough.
